Grade 3xxx Alloys

Composition

The principle alloying element in Grade 3xxx is Manganese, making up to 1.8% of these alloys by weight. Additional alloying elements include; ≤1.8 Silicon, ≤1.5 Magnesium, ≤1.0 Iron, ≤1.0 Zinc, ≤0.9 Copper, ≤0.4 Chromium, ≤0.35 Titanium, ≤0.3 Zirconium, ≤0.1 Lithium, ≤0.1 Nickel, ≤0.05 Vanadium & ≤0.05 Gallium

Common Forms

3xxx Series Alloys are commonly available in

  • Sheets and Plates

  • Drawn and extruded Tubes

  • Pipes

  • Extruded Wire, Rod, Bar and Profiles

  • Rolled and cold finished Wires, Rods and Bars

  • Rivets

  • Forgings

  • Foil

  • Finstock

(Not all alloys or tempers available in all shapes)

Characteristics

  • Most popular general purpose alloy

  • Stronger than 1xxx series with same good formability

  • Good cold workability

  • Precipitation hardened

Uses

  • Automotive parts

  • Chemical Equipment

  • Lorry frames

  • Electronics

  • Agricultural applications

  • Architectural applications

  • Leisure equipment

  • Kitchen Equipment

  • Furniture

  • Cabinets

Weldability

3XXX Series Aluminium is easily welded. Particularly good results may be achieved with 3003 in the H tempers

Machinability

Grade 3xxx Alloys are not readily machined.
