Grade 4xxx Alloys

Composition

The principle alloying element in Grade 4xxx is Silicon, accounting for up to 21.5% of these alloys by weight. Additional alloying elements include; ≤5.4 Iron, ≤5.0 Copper, ≤2.2 Nickel, ≤2.0 Magnesium, ≤2.0 Bismuth, ≤1.5 Manganese, ≤1.3 Zinc, ≤0.25 Chromium, ≤0.2 Titanium, ≤0.03 Lead, ≤0.01 Zirconium & ≤0.005 Boron

Characteristics

  • Generally used in welding rods and other joining methods

Weldability

Grade 4xxx alloys are well suited to use in welding rods and brazing sheets.

Common Forms

4xxx Series Alloys are commonly available in

  • Welding rods

  • Brazing sheets

  • Rolled and Cold Finished Rods and Wire

(Not all alloys or tempers available in all shapes)

Uses

  • Welding rods

  • Rivets

Machinability

Grade 4xxx Alloys may be machined, but aren't best suited to forming in this way.
