Grade 5xxx Alloys

Composition

The principle alloying element in Grade 5xxx is Magnesium, accounting for up to 6.0% by weight of these alloys. Further alloying elements include; ≤2.8 Zinc, ≤1.8 Tin, ≤1.4 Manganese, ≤1.4 Silicon, ≤0.8 Copper, ≤0.35 Chromium, ≤0.30 Zirconium, ≤0.2 Titanium, ≤0.1 Nickel, ≤0.1 Vanadium, ≤0.05 Gallium & ≤0.0009 Lithium

5xxx Series Alloys are commonly available in

  • Drawn and extruded Tubes

  • Extruded Wire, Rod and Bar and Profiles

  • Rolled and cold finished Wires, Rods and Bars

  • Rivets

(Not all alloys or tempers available in all shapes)

Characteristics

  • Easily anodised in 5005 alloy

  • Strong yet easily formed

  • Excellent welding capabilities

  • Enhanced resistance to marine corrosion

  • Once welded has excellent joint strength

  • Can be used from cryogenic temperatures up to 205°C

  • Precipitation hardened

Machinability

Grade 5xxx Alloys are not generally suitable for machining, with few exceptions.

Weldability

Grade 5xxx alloys are almost uniformly excellent for joining via arc welding. Gas welding may be used in the lower grades.
