An Introduction

Sheets and Plates are the most commonly produced mill products. They are usually hot rolled and often clad with other elements to increase corrosion resistance, as well as extruded or machined to create corrugated or ribbed sheets. Typically flat products under 6.5mm are reffered to as "Sheet," whilst those in excess 6.5mm are known as "Plate."

Found extensively across the engineering industry. they may be employed as cladding or roofing for a building, the skin of an aeroplane fuselage or wings, or the container "walls" of a pressure vessel. Depending upon their application, they may be employed to be structural strong, pressure containing or corrosion repelling. They are also very versatile in the way that they can be formed to produce final products. Popular ways of shaping, both hot and cold include; stamping, hydroforming, pressing, bending and, for the old school, the English Wheel.
